20th Century Asian Pear Juicy, sweet, mild flavored fruit is crisp like an apple. Early to mid-August in Central CA. Keeps well. Easy to grow, heavy bearing small tree. 300-400 hours. Self-fruitful or pollenized. by Shinseiki, Bartlett, or other.

Hosui Asian Pear Consistently rated the best-tasting Asian pear at Dave Wilson Nursery fruit tastings. Large, juicy, sweet, flavorful, refreshing, crisp like an apple. Brownish-orange russeted skin. Harvest early to mid-August in Central CA. 300-400 hours. Pollenized by Shinko, Chojuro, Bartlett, or 20th Century.

Shinseiki Asian Pear Juicy, sweet, refreshing, crisp like an apple. Easy to grow. Keeps well. Harvest late July/early August in Central CA. Bright yellow skin. Vigorous, heavy bearing (usually by 2nd year). 250-300 hours. Self-fruitful.

Royal Rainier Cherry Large yellow cherry with slightly more red blush than Rainier. Excellent flavor, taste test winner. Ripens early, about 3-5 days ahead of Rainier. Chill requirement 500 hours. Pollenized by Bing, Black Tartarian and Lapins. USDA Zones 5-9. (Zaiger)

Chicago Hardy Fig Late season mahogany to purple fruit are set on current season’s growth. One of the most frost hardy of all figs. Known to grow into zone 5. Little to no breba crop. Best quality late summer through fall. Required chill 100 hours or less. Self-fruitful. Best in zones 5-10

Desert King Fig (A.k.a. “King”) Light green ‘white’ skin, strawberry colored pulp. Rich flavor, excellent fresh eating quality. Large breba (spring) crop. Later crop is light in hot climates, heavier in coastal climates. Prune only lightly, occasionally. (Heavy winter pruning removes breba crop.) 100 hours. Self-fruitful. USDA Zones 5-9.

Improved Brown Turkey Fig Large, brown skin, pink flesh. Sweet, rich flavor, used fresh. Widely adapted - coast or inland climate. Small tree, prune to any shape. 100 hours. Self-fruitful. USDA Zones 7-9.

Lattarula Fig (A.k.a. “Italian Honey”) Reliable and productive. Greenish yellow exterior color with sweet, honey-amber pulp. Good breba and late summer crop. Naturally semi-dwarf compact plant. Good for small space and container culture. Frost hardy when established. Chill hours 100 or less. Self-fruitful. Best in zones 7-11.

Multi-Bud Fruit Salad, Cold Hardy, Polly-Hrkn-Hrko-Hrct-Supr Polly White Peach, Harken Peach, Harko Nectarine, Harcot Apricot and Superior Plum budded onto Citation rootstock. Finished trees include 5n1's plus assorted 4n1's and 3n1's.

Black Beauty Mulberry (Morus nigra sp.) Large, shiny fruit similar to Persian. Can be grown as a tree or large shrub. Attractive to birds. Self-fruitful. 200 hours or less. USDA Zones 4-10.

Tea's Weeping Mulberry Morus alba 'Pendula' (Morus alba ‘pendula’) Fast growing, heat-loving tree with blackberry-like fruit. Mature tree size 20 by 20 ft. Low chilling requirement. USDA Zones 4-9.

Arctic Blaze White Nectarine Taste test winner. One of the best of the low acid white nectarines: rich flavor and firm texture in early season, very sweet when soft ripe. Large size, red and creamy white skin. Harvest mid to late-August in Central CA, after Arctic Queen white nectarine. Estimated chilling requirement 700-800 hours. Self-fruitful. (Pat. Harko Nectarine One of the highest scoring nectarines in DWN fruit tastings. Cold hardy Canadian variety has showy, large, single pink blossoms. Ripens with Redhaven Peach in early July in Central CA. Tolerant of bacterial spot and brown rot. 800 hours. Self-fruitful.

Mericrest Nectarine Very cold hardy, frost hardy, late bloom. Crops after sub-zero winters. Large, red-skinned yellow freestone with rich tangy flavor. Very high scoring in taste tests, highly recommended. Mid-July in Central CA. 800 hours. Self-fruitful.

Contender Peach Contender is a proven producer of high quality, all-purpose freestone peaches for cold climates. The medium to large-sized firm fruit is sweet, juicy, aromatic and very flavorful. Mostly red skin, non-browning yellow flesh. Vigorous tree, frost tolerant late-blooming buds, moderate to good resistance to bacterial spot. Harvest about three weeks after Redhaven. Introduced by North Carolina State University in 1989. Chilling requirement 800 hours. Self-fruitful. Zones 4-9.

Harken Peach From Canada, a sibling of Canadian Harmony peach. Red-skinned medium size yellow freestone is sweet and flavorful, with non-browning flesh. Ripens early midseason, a few days after Redhaven. One of highest rated peaches for Western Washington. Dessert/cooking/freezing. 800 hours. Self-fruitful.

Polly White Peach One of the most winter hardy peach varieties. Developed in Iowa, hardy to -20 deg F. Reliable crops of tasty, sweet, medium-sized, white-fleshed fruit. Crimson-blushed white skin. 1,000 hours. Self-fruitful.

Snow Beauty White Peach Taste test winner: one of the all-time highest-scoring varieties in blind fruit tastings at Dave Wilson Nursery. Low acid, high sugar, tantalizing flavor. Comice Pear The famous gift pack pear. Sweet, aromatic, fine texture, superb flavor and quality - one of the best. Short neck, greenish-yellow skin with red blush. Late harvest. 600 hours. Self-fruitful in most climates of Western U.S. or plant with Bartlett.

Harrow Delight Pear Fire blight resistant, fruit similar to Bartlett. Yellow skin with attractive red blush. Smooth, fine flesh is especially flavorful. Ripe two weeks before Bartlett. Heavy bearing tree. Introduced in 1982 (Ontario, Canada). 800 hours. Interfruitful with Bartlett, Bosc, D’Anjou and Moonglow.

Fuyu (Jiro) Persimmon (“Apple Persimmon”) Medium size, flat shape, still crunchy when ripe, non-astringent. Cool or hot climate. Hardy, attractive tree, practically pest free. Fall harvest. 200 hours. Self-fruitful.

Dapple Dandy Pluot® Interspecific Plum Taste test winner. Ranks with Flavor King and Flavor Supreme Pluot® varieties as best-flavored fruit at Dave Wilson Nursery tastings. Creamy white and red fleshed freestone with wonderful plum-apricot flavor. Skin greenish-yellow with red spots, turning to a maroon and yellow dapple. August harvest in Central CA. 400-500 hours. Flavor Grenade Pluot® Interspecific Plum Elongated green fruit with red blush. Crisp texture, explosive flavor. Taste test winner. Hangs on the tree for 4-6 weeks. Early Italian (Richards) Prune Similar to Italian, but sweeter, slightly larger and more productive. Shorter growing season requirement than Italian (ripens 1-2 weeks earlier). Originated near Yakima, Washington. Introduced in 1935. 800 hours. Self-fruitful.

French Improved Prune California's commercial prune. Reddish purple skin,dark amber flesh. Very sweet, high quality fruit dessert/can/dry. 800 hours. Self-fruitful.

Sugar Prune Reddish purple skin, greenish yellow flesh, very sweet. Used fresh and for canning. Lower chilling requirement than other European prune/plums. 550 hours. Self-fruitful.

Marion Blackberry Medium to large size firm, sweet, bright berries. Excellent for fresh and dessert use. Rated by many as the best pie berry. Long harvest June through summer. Cross of Olallieberry developed in Oregon where it is a major commercial variety. Very long, vine-like canes require support. Self-fruitful. Best in zones 6 - 9

Olallieberry (“Olallieberry”) - Rubus argutus - Medium size berries are sweeter than tart with an old- fashioned wild blackberry flavor. Developed in Oregon but does extremely well in California. Harvest July through summer. Highly adaptable. Self-fruitful. Best in zones 4- 11.

Prime Ark Freedom® Blackberry First thornless primocane blackberry, from U of Arkansas. Large fruit with good flavor, floricane fruit ripens early July. New canes (primocanes) begin fruiting mid-August in years when summer heat is not excessive. For home gardens and local markets; short storage life. Upright growth habit, but may require some support. USDA Zones 5-9. Pat. No. 26990.

Goji Berry Lycium barbarum (aka Wolfberry) Highly acclaimed for high nutrient and antioxidant value. Recently termed a superfood. Ripe berries can be used fresh, dried, frozen and in teas. Goji has an appealing spicy, nutty flavor. Berries are bright red-orange when ripe. Harvest summer through fall. Shrubby plant to 8-12 ft. or prune to desired manageable size. Hardy to sub-zero and very drought tolerant once established. Requires neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Well adapted to container growing. Self-fruitful. USDA Zones 4-11.

Black Velvet Gooseberry Produces heavy crops of delicious large and sweet deep purple berries. These berries resemble blueberries when allowed to fully ripen on the vine. Very mildew and disease resistant along with being very winter hardy. Best in zones 4 - 8. Self-fruitful.

Tomuri Male Kiwi Actinidia chinensis, aka A. deliciosa. Pollenizer for Vincent female. Does not bear fruit. One male can pollenize up to eight Vincent females.

Vincent Female Kiwi Actinidia chinesis, aka A. deliciousa. Low chilling requirement, adapted to Southern CA. Tasty, well-regarded fuzzy-skinned fruit. Pollenized by Tomuri Male.

Carmelo Walnut Late leafing and blooming, adapted to colder climate than Hartley or other popular English walnuts. Very large, well filled nut. 700 hours. Self-fruitful. (Rootstock: NCB walnut or Paradox.)

Franquette Walnut Last English walnut to leaf out, less susceptible to spring frost damage. Very large tree, excellent shade. Fair production of well sealed, thin-shelled, high quality nuts. Pollenizer for Hartley. 700 hours. Self-fruitful. (Rootstock: NCB walnut or Paradox.)

Idaho Carpathian Walnut Cold hardy carpathian-type. Large, sweet, high quality kernel. Bears young and heavy. Vigorous tree. 700 hours. Self-fruitful. (Rootstock: NCB walnut.)

Purple Pony Flowering Plum High-Head Prunus cerasifera 'Purple Pony' Showy purple foliage holds its color all season. Believed to be sterile (no fruit). Height at full maturity 10-12 feet. Single pale pink flower. Hardy to USDA Zone 5. Grown and sold as low-head (18" trunk) and high-head (3 ft. trunk).

Pink Lady Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles x superba ‘Pink Lady’) Compact shrub with showy pink flowers. USDA zones 5-8.

Super Red™ Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles japonica ‘Moned’) Spectacular, large, bright red flowers in late winter/early spring. Cut branches placed in water will bloom indoors. Upright growth to 8 by 6-8 ft. wide. Prune after bloom season.

Texas Scarlet Flowering Quince Chaenomeles speciosa 'Texas Scarlet' (Chaenomeles x superba ‘Texas Scarlet’) Orange-red flowers in spring, Round-shaped shrub. Height to 3 ft. From a cross between C. japonica and C. speciosa.

Big Johnny Wisteria Deciduous, fast-growing, woody, long-lived vine. Bears huge clusters (18 long) of single purple flowers in spring. Full sun, little summer water when established.

Quaking Aspen Populus tremuloides (Populus tremuloides) Very distinctive tree - light green round leaves flutter and shimmer in the slightest breeze. Fast growing to 40-60 ft. Smooth bark, light gray-green to almost white. Bright yellow fall color. USDA Zones 6-8.

Chinese Fringe Tree Chionanthus retusus Magnificent in bloom. Moderate grower to 20 ft. Flowers in clusters to 4 inches in length.

Wilson Mimosa, clump Albizia julibrissin 'Wilson' Rapid growth to 35 ft. high by 50 ft. wide. Fernlike branches, pink pompon flowers. Tolerates hot summer, desert conditions. Drought tolerant, but best with ample water. Selection 'Ernest Wilson': pink and white flowers, more winter hardy than the species. Sunset Zones 2-23. Clump form is a multi-stemmed tree.
